Evidence of Trust

07/18/1998

How do you know if something is true? I think most intelligent people, carrying a healthy dose of skepticism, look for evidence. Think of dating... Sure, you want the person of your dreams to tell you they love you, but don't you also need to see it? In the way they look at you, how they act around you, what they do for you? And if you don't see it, no matter how many times they may say it, will you really be happy with the relationship? I suspect not.

So this brings us to the interesting issue of trust. When it comes right down to it, in most cases you trust someone because of a lack of evidence that they'd betray you. You tell someone a secret, and you trust them not to spread it... But if they did, how certain are you that you'd find out? This, perhaps, explains at least part of the reason so many people seem to have trouble trusting others. There are certainly ways to prove trustworthiness as well, but it definately seems to me that the primary criteria is the lack of evidence to the contrary.
